Peer Mediation Training Course: Second day

Here you have a detail development of the second training course day for Helpers and Mediators



Summary of the work developped the previous day:

Some of the students will briefly read their ideas about the 4 modules that they noted down in the conclusions the previous day.

Comments on them.

Explanation of the work for this day:

They will find a programme for the day in the programme they can find in their folder. We will explain the Schedule for the day and then we will listen to the Michael Jackson song.

Group work:

We will divide students in two groups: helpers on one side (groups 1 and 2) and mediators (groups 3 and 4).

a.Helpers group:

They will be explained (by using a power point presentaion) the role of helpers. Conclusions about the situations where they can collaborae will be commented and we will explain how they can help. We will also tell them how they have to work when they are back to school and the monthly meetings we will maintain as follow-ups.

We will insisto n the fact that they are helpers of their peers and not helpers of the teachers.

In pairs, students will give examples of situations that can happen in their classroom (or situations that are currently happeing) and will discuss on what they can do.

It is important to make clear the difference between a formal mediation (as mediators would do) and non-formal mediation (what helpers do).

Once the group work is finished, they must think on how they are going to explain to mediators (in 10-15 min) what is the role of a helper at school. Then, they will créate a scrip to show a situation to the other group, where helpers will interact.

b.Mediators group:

We will clarify that they will do formal mediation and what it implies (see page 2 Torrego). We will read the photocopy and comment on it.

Students need to know perfectly how to act. For this purpose, we will read carefully the information on pages 61, 62 and 63 in Torrego. We will also use the last part of the Power Point presentation.

When students have understood the theory, we will watch a video with the whole groupc about mediation, produced by the University of Barcelona.

We will comment the video in detail and all the doubts will be clarified.

Finally, mediators will think on how to explain to helpers what their role is. They will also créate a scrip to show a situation to the other group, where mediators will interact to solve a problema.

Sharing:

Each group will explain the conclusions upon the activities in 30 minutes and will perform the situations created fot that purpose.

We need to make sure that they all have understood perfectly what their role is from now on in each high school.

On their notes they will write:

HELPERS AND MEDIATIORS HAVE DIFFERENT ROLES BUT WE ALL WORK IN THE SAME TEAM. OUR ONLY OBJECTIVE IS TO MAKE SURE EVERYBODY IS CALM, SAFE AND HAPPY IN OUR SCHOOLS.

Closing ceremony:

All participants will be given a diploma by the headteachers. We will share some general discussions about the course and we will finish with the song.
